DWIB is filled with some of the most driven and hardworking individuals I know. These traits are positive and all, but they can also lead us to unconsciously neglect our mental health. I want to remind you that it is okay to take a break. Not only is it okay, it is necessary. You can’t stress self-care enough.
I know all about feeling like you constantly have to be on top of all your sh*t. I thrive on being busy. Since freshman year of high school, I have managed to add more and more things to my plate. By senior year of high school, I had pushed myself to my breaking point countless times. Instead of acknowledging what I had accomplished, I chose to focus on my flaws which made me want to keep on working. Constant breakdowns? I’m over it.
Currently, I am challenging myself to take some time during the day to relax and to reflect. So far, it has been beyond rewarding. Self-care is not selfish. It is vital to our growth and development. About two years ago, I purchased Dr. Patrizia Collard’s The Little Book of Mindfulness. I only started investing my time with the book this past summer and the only regret I have is not taking the book seriously when I first got my hands on it. Personally, this book has helped me improve my mental health and I encourage you to get your own copy.
There is an infinite amount of ways to practice self-care. For me, self-care looks like getting enough sleep, taking breaks from social media, and putting some time aside to focus on a hobby. To someone else, self-care can look like going for a run outside, reading a book, or cuddling with their pets.
Over the years, I have realized the importance of taking time for myself. It is so important for your mental health to take real breaks. Remember: being busy is good, but not too busy to take care of yourself.
