Week 9 is that time of the quarter when you’re so close to the end, but it still feels so far away. It can be difficult to stay motivated and inspired around this point, but here are some things you can do to kick yourself back into gear!
1. Remember to take breaks
We’re all stressed and busy at this time of the quarter, but keep in mind that overworking yourself is not the way to go! Go sit in a coffee shop for half an hour and have a chat with a friend- steer clear of academic topics for this, you’re taking a break, not rehashing how stressed you are!
2. Take some photos
You don’t have to be a master photographer to do this! Take some with your phone or an actual camera if you have one and you’ll be amazed at how many beautiful sights there are that you didn’t notice before!
3. Watch a movie
Reference the blog post by Sahar Forouzanfar a couple weeks back for a list of great recommendations! Link HERE. If you’re looking for something to inspire you and kick up some creative spirit or motivation, look for a movie known for a great soundtrack!
4. Take a walk or go for a run
Even if you’re not an exercise junkie, going for a run or just a walk is a great way to relax but also find some inspiration. Exercising first also makes it easier to focus when you study later! There are so many spots on campus that would be great to walk through, my favorite (of course) is the Arboretum! Walk by the water or through the Redwood Grove! Birds chirping and the calming water is a sure way to inspire and relax you at the same time!
5. Go to the Farmer’s Market downtown on Saturday morning
Fresh produce, lively music performances, positive vibes and-- oh right-- dogs and babies! Have a picnic on the field and support local businesses that set up tents to sell breakfast and lunch!
6. Stay organized
Keeping a planner/journal is a great way to keep yourself on track and stay motivated. Checklists and large calendars are great resources to keep track of due dates and events. Personally, writing everything down on a large calendar encourages me to try my best to finish assignments ahead of time. You can also write out a timeline for yourself. Make sure to include study breaks and mealtimes, health should always come first!
7. Find a new study zone
Sick of the library? A change of scenery can help bring your focus back! Try going to other libraries on campus. Not everyone realizes that there are other libraries too, not just Shields which can get super full around the end of the quarter. There’s also the public Davis library you can go to! Or, find a coffeeshop with free wifi. Mishka’s Cafe, Cloud Forest Cafe, and Temple Coffee Roasters downtown all have free wifi and are great places to study and are close to campus!
8. Go to the Aggie Reuse Store
It’s a hidden gem between the Silo and Rock Hall and it’s overflowing with creativity! The perfect place to find some inspiration and positivity. The Aggie Reuse Store is a little thrift store with all kinds of knick knacks including clothes, books, craft supplies and much more. Even better, all the merchandise are sold at super affordable prices!
9. Keep a positive mindset!
Be your own cheerleader! It’s tough to stay positive right before finals, but doing little things like putting up sticky notes with affirmations around your room, or even just smiling more can make a big difference on your attitude.
