1. Get out of your comfort zone
Step out of your comfort zone, and try something new! Switch things up in your life and try to stray away from the same old routine. It is normal to feel fear and discomfort when you do step out of your comfort zone. However, if you let fear take control you are stopping yourself from experiencing things that in the back of your mind you want to try. So why not go for it and try something new? In the end it will be worth it because you will feel good about challenging yourself and you might find a new hobby or passion.
2. When things get tough, stay focused on the good things
Although you may be going through a rough time it is key to channel those negative thoughts into a positive goal. Stay focused on the things that make you happy and the things that will help you academically. The ability to deal with hardship and adversity with positivity is the key to your future and the strengthening of you as an individual. Remember to focus on what your goals are instead of putting all your energy towards negative thoughts. Learn to not have regrets and let go of the past because things happen for a reason. I promise you will grow and become stronger from these experiences. One thing that has personally helped me is writing 3 things I am grateful for everyday. Being grateful, is a very important key to your happiness, friendships, relationships, and mental health. Writing down what you are grateful for will force you to look at the positive things in your life, and appreciate the little things too. If you look hard enough you can even find positivity in the negative things.
3. Be Consistent
Be consistent with your goals. The way to attain what your mind wants is to practice staying committed to your actions. The frequency of what you do will help create good habits. This will take organization and willpower but will yield results. Ultimately you feel a sense of satisfaction. One way I keep in check with this is I make a checkbox for all the things I want to achieve throughout the day. At the end of the day I tick off the tasks I have completed which helps me feel a sense of achievement. Also, setting a time to do things will help you stick to them better.
4. Be Around Positive People
Whoever you surround yourself with will affect the way you look at yourself and how you handle situations. Friends have a huge impact on your psyche. Positivity is infectious, and if your friends are constantly being positive and encouraging you it will affect you in a good way. Be around friends who uplift you, and are goal-oriented. You can learn a lot from good friendships, adopt good habits, and grow together.
5. Take a chance
Do something that scares you, and overcome a fear. If you consistently do things you're not inclined to do it will soon be normal to step out and take risks. Your fears will seem minute eventually. If you take a chance and fail at something you end up growing regardless because you learn. Failing is a fear that is common because it tends to bring up other fears such as feelings of shame, being mocked, or looked down on. However if you take away the fear of failure all together and you take a risk you will be comfortable with the outcome regardless. Be comfortable with failing because it is totally normal. Work on your goals, take a chance to do something regardless of failure and you will be unstoppable!
Many studies have shown that regular and consistent exercise will help you feel accomplished and your brain will improve its memory. According to The Guardian, physical activity can really affect your mood too. Essentially, when we do exercise we get a “runner’s high” and that feeling comes from the body’s homemade opiate, the endorphin rush. Therefore after we exercise we get that feeling of happiness. So put in your favorite tunes, hit the gym, start exercising, and improve your mental health :)
7. Have a Positive Mindset
Happiness comes within. Creating a positive mindset is one of the most important things to strengthen your mind. Choosing to look at things in a good light and maintaining a positive attitude will take you very far. If you set your mind to think happy thoughts and block out any thoughts of doubt about yourself you won’t regret it. Give yourself reasons to go for it instead of telling yourself you can't do something or you aren't good enough. One thing that helps me a lot is to listen or look at motivational content, quotes and videos that make me laugh or smile. It can be anything from watching inspirational Youtube videos, looking at inspirational quotes, watching Ted talks, memes or puppy videos.
8. Be Yourself
Learn to love yourself and accept who you are because YOU are beautiful. Never forget to smile and laugh. Don’t hate yourself for everything you are not, rather love yourself for everything that you are.
